Item Description: This paper presents the first demonstration of a wholly novel experimental technique for time resolved fluorescence imaging. There are two established approaches to temporal resolution, i. direct observation in time domain using fast detectors or ii. indirect observation from frequency response measurements. This paper presents an approach based on modulated pulsed excitation (stroboscopic) and d.c. detection. It transforms the measurement of fluorescence lifetime in that it uses time integrated detection thus avoiding the usual trade-off between high speed resolution and low detection signal.
