However, these benefits are not guaranteed, rather they are dependent upon the quality of the experiences that young athletes have. Young athletes’ experiences of training environments are particularly important because they spend so much time training, without the excitement of competition. As such, the purpose of this chapter is to consider how strength and conditioning coaches can create optimal training environments for young athletes. Specifically, we begin by considering what makes an optimal youth sport experience, considering the value of creating fun and safe settings. Subsequently, we focus specifically on the training environment, considering the overarching climate that needs to be created to enact the best possible opportunities for learning and engagement. The creation of such an environment is largely dictated by the quality of the relationships that exist between the various actors who are involved. Thus, consideration of how to enhance coach–athlete, athlete–athlete, and parent-athlete relationships will be provided. Finally, this chapter will conclude with a case study, providing practical insights into the application of the previously discussed literature when working as a strength and conditioning coach.
<type>Book chapter</type><journal>Strength and Conditioning for Young Athletes</journal><volume/><journalNumber/><paginationStart>324</paginationStart><paginationEnd>338</paginationEnd><publisher>Routledge</publisher><placeOfPublication>London</placeOfPublication><isbnPrint/><isbnElectronic>9781003485742</isbnElectronic><issnPrint/><issnElectronic/><keywords/><publishedDay>22</publishedDay><publishedMonth>1</publishedMonth><publishedYear>2026</publishedYear><publishedDate>2026-01-22</publishedDate><doi>10.4324/9781003485742-21</doi><url>https://doi.org/10.4324/9781003485742-21</url><notes/><college>COLLEGE NANME</college><CollegeCode>COLLEGE CODE</CollegeCode><institution>Swansea University</institution><apcterm/><funders/><projectreference/><lastEdited>2026-04-30T11:09:00.3474147</lastEdited><Created>2026-04-30T11:02:32.8529924</Created><path><level id="1">Faculty of Science and Engineering</level><level id="2">School of Engineering and Applied Sciences - Sport and Exercise Sciences</level></path><authors><author><firstname>Camilla</firstname><surname>Knight</surname><orcid/><order>1</order></author><author><firstname>Maita</firstname><surname>Furusa</surname><order>2</order></author><author><firstname>Ben</firstname><surname>Pullen</surname><order>3</order></author><author><firstname>Kurtis</firstname><surname>Pankow</surname><orcid>0000-0002-1782-3877</orcid><order>4</order></author><author><firstname>Craig</firstname><surname>Harrison</surname><order>5</order></author></authors><documents/><OutputDurs/></rfc1807> |
