| Abstract: |
It is with great pleasure that we introduce the inaugural volume of Innovation Academy: Advanced Management (Applied Innovation), an open-access collection that highlights the exceptional work produced by learners on the PGCert Applied Innovation programme. This publication brings forward research outputs and practice-informed projects that embody the central tenet of applied innovation: the purposeful integration of theory, evidence, and action. This volume captures how learners translate academic frameworks into real-world innovation through experiential learning settings such as CLIMB (Cardiff and Vale University Health Board) and the Exemplar Programme (Bevan Commission). These environments provide authentic innovation challenges, enabling learners to apply analytical tools, systems thinking, and change methodologies to complex organisational contexts. Across the projects presented, learners demonstrate how academically grounded approaches can:•Enable innovation within complex systems•Support transformation under real-world constraints and organisational pressures•Deliver tangible benefits for organisations, services, and communitiesThe contributions assembled here exemplify the productive interplay between scholarly inquiry and applied practice. Each project engages directly with contemporary challenges in innovation management, service redesign, and transformational change, advancing both conceptual clarity and actionable, context-specific solutions. Collectively, the works reflect the academic rigour of our students and their commitment to generating measurable impact within their professional spheres. These projects also align with key national priorities for Wales. They resonate with A Healthier Wales (Welsh Government, 2018), which sets out a whole-system approach to integrated, sustainable models of care, and with the Innovation Strategy for Wales (Welsh Government, 2023), which emphasises mission-driven innovation, improved translational pathways, and research that delivers societal and economic value, thereby contributing to Wales’s broader ambition to cultivate a resilient, equitable, and innovation-led future. The interdisciplinary composition of the cohort, spanning health and social care, the third sector, public services, industry, and the wider life sciences landscape, has greatly enriched this volume. The diversity of perspectives strengthens the analyses presented, enhances knowledge exchange, and underscores the collaborative ethos that defines the PGCert Applied Innovation. For academics and researchers, this volume provides insight into emerging practitioner-led scholarship. For policymakers, it offers evidence of innovation capabilities developing across the Welsh ecosystem. For students and professionals, it presents accessible exemplars of inquiry-driven innovation applied to real organisational challenges. The Innovation Academy Research Series reaffirms Swansea University and the All-Wales Intensive Learning Academy for Innovation in Health and Social Care’s enduring commitment to advancing innovation scholarship, promoting open access, and disseminating knowledge that informs both policy and practice. |
