Abstract: This chapter will examine the literature base around teachers’ perceptions of and interactions with parents in regard to supporting the learning of children and young people. Using various theoretical lenses, including critical race theory, the chapter will examine the deficit discourses which often inform the views school staff take of parents and parent engagement in learning, and suggest ways forward for in school action and teacher training.
