FAA legislation has recently classified aero-engine combustors as safety critical components, requiring damage tolerant lifing in preference to “safe-life” methodologies Novel, automated test methods are described for creep-fatigue crack propagation measurements under extreme temperature (approaching 1000oC), strain controlled conditions utilising thin sheet specimens. Unique data describing the evolution of constitutive behaviour and associated stress relaxation are presented, including evidence of continued crack propagation under significantly negative stress ratios. The potential commercial impact (life extensions) from this research are clearly demonstrated.
