Item Description: |
The structural integrity of monolithic and continuous fibre reinforced forms of silicon carbide is described, utilizing our world class high temperature creep testing facilities (data generated under tension up to 1400oC). This previous portfolio of research was sponsored by Rolls-Royce and EPSRC (GR/N28467/01). However, a major shift in commercial interest has occurred, influenced by such research and recognizing the adverse effects of oxidation in silicate based systems. Future gas turbine applications for ceramics are now focused around oxide-oxide ceramic composites. This remains an area of interest at Swansea, including collaboration through the TSB/EPSRC funded initiative ACMEA (TS/G000484/1).
