The novelty of this work was that it was the first to report cardiac benefits of long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), demonstrated here through time-dependent reversal of autonomic nervous system depression. A rigorous pre-post clinical intervention study design and advanced time-series analysis methods provided evidence to support additional cardiac benefits of LTOT. The work led to further clinical collaborations to establish the cardio-pulmonary pathophysiology underlying COPD. This and companion works fostered the knowledge underpinning a major industrial collaboration with Haemair Ltd. (CIRP/A4B grant HE09COL1029) to empirically model a control system for an artificial lung device. |
