Abstract: In this thesis I study the geometry of the monopole equations on complex curves. The moduli space is shown to be compact and carries a Kahler structure. Zero dimensional moduli spaces are investigated along with their relation to the uniformization theorem. I then study the non-abelian analogue of the equations which can be regarded as a generalization of Yang-Mills theory on Riemann surfaces. Possible relations with three dimensional topology are discussed. Some background material is provided, including an introduction to differential and spin geometry on complex curves and four-manifolds.
