Abstract: This is a response to Dr JM Clarke's article calling for governments to stop denying a right to free healthcare to migrants entering the European Union. It discusses the economic and logistical constraints confronting European healthcare systems, and argues that certain limits will have to be accepted. It highlights the potentially high volume of demand, uncertainty about the extent of morbidity in migrant populations, and the vulnerability of European systems in a period of austerity. Against this background certain limits on access adopted in Germany and Sweden are not unreasonable. The discussion continues in online responses, including one by Hughes that expands the original argument.
