Item Description: Sverdrup’s critical depth hypothesis (CDH) has been regarded as the standard model of phytoplankton bloom triggered by increase in irradiance and shoaling of the mixed layer, but several key assumptions of CDH have not been evaluated carefully. In this study we showed that heterogeneous distribution of plankton persist even within the surface "mixed" layer, providing a seeding stock that rapidly exploits seasonal nutrient influx from the deep, leading to abrupt bloom formation not predicted by CDH. The results have important implications for ecosystem dynamics in the vast tropical oceans.
