The ‘Introduction’ to this edition, ‘D.H. Lawrence’s Exodus’, explores 'Aaron’s Rod' as an image of the historical, sexual and psychical crises of post-First World War Europe as Lawrence saw them. For Lawrence, the entire edifice of post-War European society was in a state of crisis and collapse, and 'Aaron’ Rod' furiously interrogates and revises Europe’s history, traditions and values. It does so by affirming single selfhood in the face of social disintegration, and by charting the rebirth of individual being from the ruins of European culture. The narrative presents a resistant modernist quest and travelogue that seeks to find new modes of being in the wake of Europe’s post-War dissolution. |
