Abstract: After a historical introduction on the changing place of translation in the French currciulum of universities in the UK, the study traces the marked shift towards translation and away from traditional literary-cultural studies which has taken place since the turn of the 21st century, particularly at postgrtaduate level. It examines the growing role of translation from and into French at all levels of study, from first year BA to PhD, in the light of pragmatic considerations such as high fees and worries about employability, but also in terms of future possibilities for fruitful interdisciplinary teaching and research.
