| Abstract: |
The development of lighter and more efficient transport aircraft has led to an increasedfocus on gust load alleviation. A recent consideration in aircraft design is using hinged wingtip devices to increase the aspect ratio, improving aircraft performance. Furthermore, numerical experimental tests have proved the ability of passive hinged wingtips to provide additional gust load alleviation. This work aims to introduce a brushless motor in the hinge to impose the wingtip rotation and improve gust load alleviation and manoeuvres. An innovative light wingtip that can be free-hinged or fixed to the main wing was designed. Structural tests and wind tunnel gust responses were performed on the wing with the wingtip in both configurations. Experimental measurements were used to validate aeroelastic models. The validated model of the wing with the free-hinged wingtip was used to perform time domain simulation of an active wingtip. Finally, the preliminary design of the active wingtip was performed. |
