While some studies provide valuable insights, further empirical research is needed to explore how structured music programs within educational environments directly affect children's emotional wellbeing. This thesis focuses on the impact of music education on the emotional wellbeing of children in the music classroom setting. With an emphasis on self-esteem and quality of life as well as the perspectives of adults and students, this work aims to contribute a deeper understanding of music’s impact on emotional wellbeing and the ensuing implications that result from music education’s influence. Three separate chapters within this thesis present a quantitative empirical study, a qualitative thematic analysis study, and a mixed methods study to present a comprehensive picture of potential wellbeing impact. Each methodology chapter is underpinned by specific rationales and objectives collectively advancing insights on how music may influence student wellbeing in the educational environment. The final chapter reviews the overall results from each methods chapter and provides an insightful discussion on the conceptual and practical implications of music education as well as the future of music education and wellbeing. Moreover, this thesis, to the author’s knowledge, is one of the first studies to explore the impact of music education on emotional wellbeing in the context of a classroom setting. The findings from this research seek to inform both policy, practice, and the public regarding the benefits of music within the educational system as well as adding to the overall literature regarding music education and emotional wellbeing.
<type>E-Thesis</type><journal/><volume/><journalNumber/><paginationStart/><paginationEnd/><publisher/><placeOfPublication>Swansea, Wales, UK</placeOfPublication><isbnPrint/><isbnElectronic/><issnPrint/><issnElectronic/><keywords>Music Education, Wellbeing, Self-Esteem, Quality of Life, Children, Music Intervention, Positive Psychology, Positive Education, Health, Music Therapy</keywords><publishedDay>23</publishedDay><publishedMonth>6</publishedMonth><publishedYear>2025</publishedYear><publishedDate>2025-06-23</publishedDate><doi>10.23889/SUthesis.69854</doi><url/><notes>ORCiO identifier: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9679-4225 A selection of third party content is redacted or is partially redacted from this thesis due to copyright restrictions.</notes><college>COLLEGE NANME</college><CollegeCode>COLLEGE CODE</CollegeCode><institution>Swansea University</institution><supervisor>Kemp, Andrew ; Howard, Justine</supervisor><degreelevel>Doctoral</degreelevel><degreename>Ph.D</degreename><apcterm/><funders/><projectreference/><lastEdited>2025-06-30T15:32:40.6474885</lastEdited><Created>2025-06-30T14:27:12.3381381</Created><path><level id="1">Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences</level><level id="2">School of Psychology</level></path><authors><author><firstname>ANGELA</firstname><surname>JONES</surname><order>1</order></author></authors><documents><document><filename>69854__34632__06d486ca7be34438b4128a795d8490bb.pdf</filename><originalFilename>Jones_Angela_S_PhD_Thesis_Final_Redacted_Cronfa.pdf</originalFilename><uploaded>2025-06-30T15:26:53.1489881</uploaded><type>Output</type><contentLength>8395232</contentLength><contentType>application/pdf</contentType><version>Redacted version - open access</version><cronfaStatus>true</cronfaStatus><documentNotes>Copyright: The Author, Angela S.
