This thesis addresses the development, form and effects of corporate digital surveillance on consumers and users. As such, it traces the historical development of computers as surveillance machines before providing a methodological framework. In embracing a media ecology approach, the framework draws from a range of philosophical perspectives representing a range of academic disciplines. For example, starting in phenomenological bases of understanding humans and their relationships with technology, it moves to include theories from Sociology, Behavioural Psychology, Politics and Media and Communications Studies to arrive at a position from which the subsequent chapters can draw. The chapters are arranged to relate to the various ‘environments’ of surveillance, moving from the micro level of the self before ultimately arriving at the global level. |
