Situated in the heart of the Himalayas, Nepal has embraced mountain tourism as a core development strategy. Whilst we recognize the potential tourism may hold for hill regions in Nepal, it is essential to first identify the baseline assets available for mountain communities in order for them to create and develop a local, sustainable economy. A tool for assessing such assets is the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach (SLA) which evaluates forms of natural, human, physical, financial, social, cultural, and political capital. Tourism can be supported by, as well as potentially augment, these various forms of community assets, but conversely weaknesses in these will form a barrier to development.
