Abstract

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: eurobehavioural disability (NBD) has a major impact on long-term psychosocial outcome following acquired brain injury (ABI). A recent review highlighted that a reliable and valid measure that can adequately capture the subtle and varied characteristics of NBD has yet to be develop...

A recent review highlighted that a reliable and valid measure that can adequately capture the subtle and varied characteristics of NBD has yet to be developed. In this paper, the work underpinning the 'St Andrews-Swansea Neurobehavioural Outcome Scale' (SASNOS) is described using a conceptual framework underpinned by the WHO ICF. The intention is that SASNOS will provide a reliable and valid means of measuring NBD.METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Three hundred and thirty-six sets of ratings were made regarding ABI and neurologically healthy samples. The initial pool of 117 items was subjected to exploratory factor analysis and Rasch analysis. Reliability and validity of the new measure were determined using a range of appropriate statistical methods. Forty-nine items were retained, falling into five principal factors. Content and construct validity are calculated. SASNOS has excellent discriminant/diagnostic validity. Inter-rater and test-re-test reliability are good.CONCLUSIONS: SASNOS has a range of clinical and research applications and can be employed when measuring outcome. This new measure will enable neurorehabilitation services to directly compare the clinical populations they serve using the same frame of reference for NBD.&amp;#60;/p&amp;#62;
<type>Journal Article</type><journal>Brain Injury</journal><volume>25</volume><journalNumber>1</journalNumber><paginationStart>83</paginationStart><paginationEnd>100</paginationEnd><publisher>Informa UK Limited</publisher><placeOfPublication/><isbnPrint/><isbnElectronic/><issnPrint>0269-9052</issnPrint><issnElectronic>1362-301X</issnElectronic><keywords>Acquired Brain Injury, neurorehabilitation, Outcome Measurement</keywords><publishedDay>1</publishedDay><publishedMonth>1</publishedMonth><publishedYear>2011</publishedYear><publishedDate>2011-01-01</publishedDate><doi>10.3109/02699052.2010.532849</doi><url/><notes/><college>COLLEGE NANME</college><department>Medical School - School</department><CollegeCode>COLLEGE CODE</CollegeCode><DepartmentCode>SGMED</DepartmentCode><institution>Swansea University</institution><apcterm/><lastEdited>2021-06-14T11:07:16.9904977</lastEdited><Created>2012-01-23T15:21:00.2800000</Created><path><level id="1">Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences</level><level id="2">School of Psychology</level></path><authors><author><firstname>Nick</firstname><surname>Alderman</surname><order>1</order></author><author><firstname>Rodger</firstname><surname>Wood</surname><order>2</order></author><author><firstname>Claire</firstname><surname>Williams</surname><orcid>0000-0002-0791-744X</orcid><order>3</order></author></authors><documents/><OutputDurs/></rfc1807>
