The digital divide between the ageing population and other generations has attracted much scholarly attention, while the widening divides within the ageing population has remained an under-researched area. Taking a life-course perspective, this article focuses on the uniqueness of older people’s use of digital technology in China. We adopted a combination of log records and semi-structured interviews as research methods, and collected data from 61 elderly people on their use of digital technology, in particular, smart phones. NVIVO qualitative analysis of empirical data depicts the different trajectory of media use in the elderly population, revealing the intrinsic relationship between individual life course and macro social changes, which in turn leads to differentiation in terms of access to and consumption of information. We argue that key life events, cultural capital, social networks, individual initiative, temporal and spatial factor all affect the attitude towards and usage of digital technology. Consequently, a differentiation of digital skills, digital literacy and cognitive levels can be detected within the seemingly homogenous ageing population. |
