Although existing literature discussed the potentials of the metaverse in this context, the ways the metaverse work is still being defined and accessing a complete metaverse is still not yet possible. This existing knowledge will become increasingly sophisticated and complex as developments in the metaverse continue, eventually contributing to a knowledge gap in knowledge, and its implications in shaping how the future digital environment should take form. Design/methodology/approach: This work is based on a critical reflection of the existing developments and applications of the metaverse. Drawing from authors’ experiences, and synthesis of existing works and narratives, this work discusses the applications of the metaverse, critical factors for considerations and applications of the metaverse and proposes the way forward for potential users. Findings: The metaverse provides new opportunities for the hospitality and tourism industry but the impact of the technology may not be felt immediately. The real challenge lies in developing a responsible digital environment for users and suppliers. Although the aspects to be considered are many, a lack of preparedness is a great obstacle. Research limitations/implications: This paper provides a comprehensive evaluation of how the metaverse can be applied in the hospitality and tourism sector aiming to provide diverse stakeholders insights into the associated opportunities and pitfalls. Originality/value: To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is among the first attempts to critically reflect on the possibilities of the metaverse, and contributes to the discussion on the attributes of the metaverse for tourism and hospitality (e.g. SSIs, decentralization) and includes discussion on special needs users, sustainable usage and climate change, and presents several agendas for further actions.
<type>Journal Article</type><journal>International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management</journal><volume>36</volume><journalNumber>7</journalNumber><paginationStart>2273</paginationStart><paginationEnd>2289</paginationEnd><publisher>Emerald</publisher><placeOfPublication/><isbnPrint/><isbnElectronic/><issnPrint>0959-6119</issnPrint><issnElectronic>0959-6119</issnElectronic><keywords>Hospitality and tourism, metaverse, critical reflection</keywords><publishedDay>24</publishedDay><publishedMonth>5</publishedMonth><publishedYear>2024</publishedYear><publishedDate>2024-05-24</publishedDate><doi>10.1108/ijchm-05-2023-0586</doi><url/><notes/><college>COLLEGE NANME</college><CollegeCode>COLLEGE CODE</CollegeCode><institution>Swansea University</institution><apcterm/><funders/><projectreference/><lastEdited>2024-09-17T10:44:00.2803955</lastEdited><Created>2023-09-05T15:52:21.1958460</Created><path><level id="1">Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences</level><level id="2">School of Management - Business Management</level></path><authors><author><firstname>Lai-Wan</firstname><surname>Wong</surname><order>1</order></author><author><firstname>Garry Wei-Han</firstname><surname>Tan</surname><order>2</order></author><author><firstname>Keng-Boon</firstname><surname>Ooi</surname><order>3</order></author><author><firstname>Yogesh</firstname><surname>Dwivedi</surname><order>4</order></author></authors><documents><document><filename>64427__28756__82d76a6fdfeb4fdcacf0ff2010c38da0.pdf</filename><originalFilename>64427.AAM.pdf</originalFilename><uploaded>2023-10-10T11:35:14.4883203</uploaded><type>Output</type><contentLength>260741</contentLength><contentType>application/pdf</contentType><version>Accepted Manuscript</version><cronfaStatus>true</cronfaStatus><copyrightCorrect>true</copyrightCorrect><language>eng</language></document></documents><OutputDurs/></rfc1807> |
