This is the first observational study to focus on what the governance professional does within the college governance space. From observation and other forms of evidence, the governance professional performs a significant, challenging and expert role in the processes and practices of governing colleges. The governance professional is instrumental as a governance sense-maker and, at a higher level, as translator of governing deliberations and decision making. The governance professional role in practice can vary depending upon a range of personal, local institutional and national factors. However, in essence the governance professional exists to legitimise college governance through the structures, processes and reporting of governing interactions. The article considers the extent to which the governance professional is pivotal to the governing of colleges and analyses the implications for college governing. Our research identifies some barriers to gaining greater impact from the college governance professional.
<type>Journal Article</type><journal>Educational Management Administration &amp;amp; Leadership</journal><volume>51</volume><journalNumber>4</journalNumber><paginationStart>969</paginationStart><paginationEnd>985</paginationEnd><publisher>SAGE Publications</publisher><placeOfPublication/><isbnPrint/><isbnElectronic/><issnPrint>1741-1432</issnPrint><issnElectronic>1741-1440</issnElectronic><keywords>Colleges, governance, governance professionals, strategic influencers</keywords><publishedDay>1</publishedDay><publishedMonth>7</publishedMonth><publishedYear>2023</publishedYear><publishedDate>2023-07-01</publishedDate><doi>10.1177/17411432211015215</doi><url>http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/17411432211015215</url><notes/><college>COLLEGE NANME</college><department>Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy</department><CollegeCode>COLLEGE CODE</CollegeCode><DepartmentCode>CSSP</DepartmentCode><institution>Swansea University</institution><apcterm/><funders>The project Processes and practices of governing in further education colleges in the UK: How do governing boards realise the strategic aims of the organisation? was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council [grant number ES/R00322X/1].</funders><projectreference/><lastEdited>2023-09-12T17:08:30.5111663</lastEdited><Created>2023-08-03T15:20:08.6602539</Created><path><level id="1">Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences</level><level id="2">School of Social Sciences - Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy</level></path><authors><author><firstname>Ron</firstname><surname>Hill</surname><orcid>0000-0002-9571-6372</orcid><order>1</order></author><author><firstname>Steve</firstname><surname>Garner</surname><orcid>0000-0003-1047-6080</orcid><order>2</order></author><author><firstname>Aileen</firstname><surname>Ireland</surname><order>3</order></author></authors><documents><document><filename>64024__28516__b875b89a834349dc87918f46fa21e76d.pdf</filename><originalFilename>64024.VOR.pdf</originalFilename><uploaded>2023-09-12T17:04:56.2641452</uploaded><type>Output</type><contentLength>198401</contentLength><contentType>application/pdf</contentType><version>Version of Record</version><cronfaStatus>true</cronfaStatus><documentNotes>© The Author(s) 2021.
