Abstract: <p>Controversy surrounding the use of do not resuscitate orders on patients often without their knowledge and without apparent good reason have led some to question the lawfulness of such orders. This article considers the legal basis for do not resuscitate orders and outlines best practice guidlines that will assist district nurses and other health professionals in deciding whether making such an order is lawful and for the benefit of the patient concerned</p>
