This mechanical assessment plus additional research under the EPSRC Strategic Partnership in Gas Turbines has underpinned the selection of TiAl for low pressure turbine aerofoils in future Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine derivatives, offering direct UK competition to the employment of gamma in US designed GEnX engines which entered service in 2012.
