This review paper was recently awarded best paper 2008/09 by the editors of the journal The Science of the Total Environment (STOTEN) over 1350 papers published in that period of time. The journal reviewers recognize the benchmark paper for the detailed and critical assessment of the physical-chemical properties of nanoparticles which will serve as a guidepost for future research to improve our understanding of the adverse effects of these materials from the perspective of environmental protection and to ensure the long term sustainability of the nanotechnology industry. This paper is also among the top 25 most cited papers in the STOTEN journal with a total of 50 citations.
