Item Description: The present study aims to reveal the mechanism of the small scale effect on the transverse vibration of single-atom layer nanoplates. A single indicator was defined for the first time to quantify such an effect on the vibrating nanoplates. It is found that the small scal effect is realised via the surface stress generated by the nonlocal atom-atom interaction. This study has significantly advanced the physics of the small scale effect on nanoplates.
