Data was collected via online survey, interview and focus groups and collage. The study examines menstruator&#x2019;s experiences of formal and informal menstrual education, discussing the social factors influencing their development of knowledge, and the social and infrastructural barriers they face whilst menstruating in public spaces. In addition to this, contemporary changes in menstrual discourse are examined through comparison of traditional disposable period product advertising and newer adverts for reusable products. The research found that menstruation is a multifaceted entity that is a part of the everyday lives of people who menstruate, but that society frames as a &#x2018;problem&#x2019; to be solved. The consequences of this problematisation are seen across formal menstrual education and public facilities, as these are informed and shaped by social narratives of menstruation. The study argues that in order to address the issues faced by people who menstruate, menstruation should be &#x2018;deproblematised&#x2019; in social and academic discourse, and considered as more than a problem requiring solution.
<type>E-Thesis</type><journal/><volume/><journalNumber/><paginationStart/><paginationEnd/><publisher/><placeOfPublication>Swansea</placeOfPublication><isbnPrint/><isbnElectronic/><issnPrint/><issnElectronic/><keywords>Menstruation, Society, Space, Deproblematising, Period-Product Advertising, Menstrual Education</keywords><publishedDay>19</publishedDay><publishedMonth>5</publishedMonth><publishedYear>2022</publishedYear><publishedDate>2022-05-19</publishedDate><doi/><url/><notes/><college>COLLEGE NANME</college><CollegeCode>COLLEGE CODE</CollegeCode><institution>Swansea University</institution><supervisor>Closs-Stephens, Angharad ; Clarke, Dave</supervisor><degreelevel>Master of Research</degreelevel><degreename>MSc by Research</degreename><apcterm/><lastEdited>2022-05-23T15:38:40.3783416</lastEdited><Created>2022-05-23T15:25:09.3081188</Created><path><level id="1">Faculty of Science and Engineering</level><level id="2">School of Biosciences, Geography and Physics - Geography</level></path><authors><author><firstname>GEORGIA</firstname><surname>MCGUINNESS</surname><order>1</order></author></authors><documents><document><filename>60062__24150__7ec3f249e8d24df38118ac2bb1d5cb24.pdf</filename><originalFilename>McGuinness_Georgia_MSc_Research_Thesis_Final_Redacted_Signature.pdf</originalFilename><uploaded>2022-05-23T15:34:50.3305508</uploaded><type>Output</type><contentLength>5008495</contentLength><contentType>application/pdf</contentType><version>E-Thesis &#x2013; open access</version><cronfaStatus>true</cronfaStatus><documentNotes>Copyright: The author, Georgia McGuinness, 2022.</documentNotes><copyrightCorrect>true</copyrightCorrect><language>eng</language></document></documents><OutputDurs/></rfc1807>
