Item Description: IF 2.072, Citations 8. Part of national collaborative research with Brunel University on using ultrasonic irradiation to engineer cast microstructures. Of practical significance in commercially important complex Al-Si cast alloys, it is shown that both primary and eutectic microstructure can be refined simultaneously under ultrasonication that is not achievable through chemical routes practiced widely in the industry. On the theoretical front, the paper demonstrates that enhanced heterogeneous nucleation from the high-pressure effect of cavitation contributes grain refinement contrary to longstanding belief of mechanical crystal fragmentation effect. This triggered further international collaboration to study the nucleation effects and publications are underway.
