This chapter examines the 2013 Edward Snowden disclosures of mass data collection and analysis by the National Security Agency under the codename PRISM. It will examine Snowden himself, the reasons he gave for disclosure, what those disclosures revealed, and why they have proved to be so controversial. In doing so it will examine the national security case for PRISM and its associated programs as well as why these revelations began a debate regarding not only the protection of national security but also the impact government surveillance and mass data collection have upon individual and collective privacy and civil liberties. In so doing it will raise questions of where the balance between national (and international) security and civil liberties lie in a hyper-connected world where one-to-one and one-to-many communications and mass data flows are a part of daily life. |
