Abstract: |
Raman spectroscopy was tested successfully as a non-destructive method to detect multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in phytoplankton and zooplankton samples in vivo. Exposure to MWCNTs led to lower photosynthetic efficiency and/or growth rate in phytoplankton. MWCNTs were ingested by zooplankton indiscriminately and were retained in the gut for an extended time, thereby increasing their chance of dispersal and transfer throughout the aquatic food web. |
