Abstract: |
Since blow-in of blast furnace 4 at Port Talbot Steelworks (UK) in 2013, casthouse structural movement problems have led to a loss of containment and continuous drifting of tap hole guns and drills. The retrofit of manipulator covers and several main iron runner refractory design iterations are the most likely causes. The mentioned changes resulted in increased refractory expansion which caused the connected casthouse structure to move beyond its designed compliance. Interaction between refractory and steel structure is studied by using two separate finite element models for which an extensive series of refractory material properties tests are conducted. Core drill samples were obtained from the worn working lining and characterised by X-Ray computed tomography to assess their 3D microstructure. The characterisation of the pores in relation to their location and orientation has proven that compressive plastic deformation indeed takes place. A design solution is presented which is a new integral mechanical and refractory design that guarantees independent and reduced refractory expansion which will resolve experienced movement problems. |
