Understanding and controlling the visual appearance of their product would enable manufacturers of packaging steel to meet the demands of their customers and maintain an advantage over their competitors.The surface texture of packaging steel influences the functional behaviour of the final coated product. The work presented in this thesis investigates the relationship between the surface texture and the visual appearance of packaging steel. Multi-scale analyses of un-coated and tinplate packaging steel are performed to determine the func-tional bandwidths of surface texture. Models are developed which enable multi-scale simulations of surface texture. This enables a description of the relationship between packaging steel surface texture and visual appearance from the manufacturing process through to the surface function.
