Following receipt of institutional ethical approval, 14 female coaches and practitioners (32.9±6.9 yrs) participated in individual semi-structured interviews.Following analysis, two themes were developed: 1) Knowledge and awareness, and 2) Support and management. Overall, it appeared that participants varied in their understanding and awareness of the impact of the menstrual cycle on sport performance, somewhat influenced by their own personal experiences. Participants’ knowledge and awareness subsequently impacted the support they provided to female athletes. Additionally, individual experiences and perceived secrecy relating to the menstrual cycle impacted on the informational and emotional support participants provided. Together, the findings highlight the importance of all coaches and practitioners enhancing their knowledge and understandingregarding the menstrual cycle and proactively providing support to athletes. Education to enhance coaches’ and practitioners’ knowledge and understanding will help to create a more open and supportive environment in sport, hopefully allowing for personal discomfort regarding the menstrual cycle to be addressed.
<type>Journal Article</type><journal>International Journal of Sports Science & Coaching</journal><volume>17</volume><journalNumber>2</journalNumber><paginationStart>174795412110585</paginationStart><paginationEnd/><publisher>SAGE Publications</publisher><placeOfPublication/><isbnPrint/><isbnElectronic/><issnPrint>1747-9541</issnPrint><issnElectronic>2048-397X</issnElectronic><keywords>Female athletes, coaching, sport science, periods, menstruation</keywords><publishedDay>6</publishedDay><publishedMonth>12</publishedMonth><publishedYear>2021</publishedYear><publishedDate>2021-12-06</publishedDate><doi>10.1177/17479541211058579</doi><url/><notes/><college>COLLEGE NANME</college><department>Sport and Exercise Sciences</department><CollegeCode>COLLEGE CODE</CollegeCode><DepartmentCode>STSC</DepartmentCode><institution>Swansea University</institution><apcterm/><lastEdited>2022-04-14T12:32:33.4676760</lastEdited><Created>2021-10-28T14:00:23.3804518</Created><path><level id="1">Faculty of Science and Engineering</level><level id="2">School of Aerospace, Civil, Electrical, General and Mechanical Engineering - Sport and Exercise Sciences</level></path><authors><author><firstname>Natalie</firstname><surname>Brown</surname><order>1</order></author><author><firstname>Camilla</firstname><surname>Knight</surname><orcid>0000-0001-5806-6887</orcid><order>2</order></author></authors><documents><document><filename>58494__21336__cd638a5ff8bf43c583e9560e70532995.pdf</filename><originalFilename>58494.pdf</originalFilename><uploaded>2021-10-28T14:05:33.9477935</uploaded><type>Output</type><contentLength>331672</contentLength><contentType>application/pdf</contentType><version>Accepted Manuscript</version><cronfaStatus>true</cronfaStatus><copyrightCorrect>true</copyrightCorrect><language>eng</language></document></documents><OutputDurs/></rfc1807> |
