Item Description: Originality stems from the study being the first experimental intervention to examine Burton, Naylor and Holliday’s (2001) contemporary goal-setting model for sport. Its significance relates to the findings supporting the model’s proposed mechanisms as to how goal setting influences behavior and subsequent performance in sport. A number of applied implications for psychologists and coaches’ stress management goal setting practices with athletes are identified. For rigour the experiment was conducted in situ using a high ecological validity design over an extended period of an entire competitive season, with collection of data on a number of psychological variables, including indices of performance.
