Item Description: The design decisions such as optimal orientation, location and number of die cavities, bearing length and pocket design profile at every point on the cavity are normally considered trade secrets. The academic challenge was developing an algorithm that can store geometric information on complex die designs and relate it with successful design decisions so that a ’valid design space’ is generated for new designs. The research initiated during the EPSRC project GR/R15610 with significant industrial collaboration from Hydro Aluminum Extrusion Ltd. Transcendata Europe Ltd (gab@transcendata.com) in Cambridge UK benefitted from the project in enhancing its Medial Object technology.
