Specifically, we investigate the extent to which corporate board gender diversity, including the proportion, age and level of education of female directors, affect environmental performance of Chinese publicly listed corporations. Using one of the largest Chinese datasets to-date, consisting of a sample of 383 listed A-shares from 2011 to 2015 (i.e., observations of 1,674), our findings are three-fold. First, we find that the proportion and age of female directors have a positive effect on the overall corporate environmental performance. Second, our findings indicate that the proportion and age of female directors also have a positive effect on the three individual environmental performance components, namely environmental (i) strategy, (ii) implementation and (iii) disclosure, respectively. Finally, and by contrast, we do not find any evidence that suggests that the level of education of female directors has any impact on environmental performance, neither the overall environmental performance measure nor its individual components. Our findings have important implication for regulators and policy-makers. Our evidence is robust to controlling for alternative measures, other governance and firm-level control variables, and possible endogeneities. We interpret our findings within a multi-theoretical framework that draws insights from agency, legitimacy, neo-institutional, resource dependence, stakeholder, and tokenism theoretical perspectives.
<type>Journal Article</type><journal>Business Strategy and the Environment</journal><volume>28</volume><journalNumber>1</journalNumber><paginationStart>206</paginationStart><paginationEnd>220</paginationEnd><publisher>Wiley</publisher><issnPrint>0964-4733</issnPrint><keywords>Business strategy; environmental policies and regulations; environmental management and sustainable development; governance structures; environmental performance; corporate board gender diversity/female directors; China</keywords><publishedDay>18</publishedDay><publishedMonth>1</publishedMonth><publishedYear>2019</publishedYear><publishedDate>2019-01-18</publishedDate><doi>10.1002/bse.2250</doi><url/><notes/><college>COLLEGE NANME</college><department>Management School</department><CollegeCode>COLLEGE CODE</CollegeCode><DepartmentCode>CBAE</DepartmentCode><institution>Swansea University</institution><apcterm/><lastEdited>2020-10-19T11:53:25.7270518</lastEdited><Created>2020-01-15T12:38:46.0023084</Created><path><level id="1">Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences</level><level id="2">School of Management - Accounting and Finance</level></path><authors><author><firstname>Mohamed</firstname><surname>Elmagrhi</surname><orcid>0000-0003-3803-8496</orcid><order>1</order></author><author><firstname>Collins G.</firstname><surname>Ntim</surname><order>2</order></author><author><firstname>Ahmed A.</firstname><surname>Elamer</surname><order>3</order></author><author><firstname>Qingjing</firstname><surname>Zhang</surname><order>4</order></author></authors><documents><document><filename>53272__16309__10e10f11fe054bb6afc8a7a3c1ae8081.pdf</filename><originalFilename>Accepted_BSE_09_10_2018.pdf</originalFilename><uploaded>2020-01-15T12:41:32.7740263</uploaded><type>Output</type><contentLength>816168</contentLength><contentType>application/pdf</contentType><version>Accepted Manuscript</version><cronfaStatus>true</cronfaStatus><embargoDate>2020-11-06T00:00:00.0000000</embargoDate><copyrightCorrect>true</copyrightCorrect><language>eng</language></document></documents><OutputDurs/></rfc1807> |
