Abstract: |
This volume offers a perspective on Welsh industrial history which shifts the focus away from the coal and iron communities of Victorian and Edwardian Wales, to encompass studies of a wider range of industries over a long time frame. The essays in this book span the period from the early eighteenth- to the late twentieth-century and explore the workplaces, people and markets of Welsh industry in the context of the global economy. Chapter authors offer some important new insights into the companies, the employers, the markets and the money behind the Welsh coal, copper, steel and manufacturing sectors. By acknowledging the numerical significance, but often unsung importance, of the thousands who worked in domestic service, it also prompts us to reconsider what we think of as constituting ‘industry’ in Wales. |
