Prior to his first really characteristic volume of poetry, "Extraits du Corps" (1958), Bernard Noël experimented with some very different types of writing. "Les Yeux Chimères," poems from 1955 never republished before the present article, is the only text which shows influence from the ethos and imagery of Surrealism. The novel fragment 'La Table' from the same year shows Noël in phenomenological vein reminiscent of the Sartre of "La Nausée." It was, however, in the physiological imagery he also developed at this period in "Contre-mort" (first published 1972) that Noël first explored the agenda of transcending Cartesian mind-body dualism which has been a constant of his work ever since. |
