The study has five main objectives: to investigate levels of IT; identify key factors for the effective utilization of IT; investigate strategic management of the IT/IS function; and gauge whether the management and use of data creates cases of competitive advantage within the SME sector. The research involved a quantitative survey of over 600 SMEs in Wales, which achieved a response rate of approximately 26%. Thereafter 16 enterprises were interviewed, in order to appreciate fully their usage of the IS/IT function. The study suggests that whilst utilization of IT is increasing, the potential benefits are under exploited by the majority of SMEs as a result of a lack of management direction. Instances of competitive advantage were rare, with those enterprises that are adding value focusing on acquiring knowledge, using their flexibility and reactibility and generating innovative solutions. In part 1, the authors set out the aims of the survey and present their findings. Part 2 - to be published in the next issue of BIR - will cover the research methodology and details of the sources consulted.
<type>Journal Article</type><journal>Business Information Review</journal><volume>20</volume><journalNumber>2</journalNumber><paginationStart>110</paginationStart><paginationEnd>117</paginationEnd><publisher>Sage</publisher><placeOfPublication/><isbnPrint/><isbnElectronic/><issnPrint>0266-3821</issnPrint><issnElectronic>1741-6450</issnElectronic><keywords>SME; Information Management; Information Systems</keywords><publishedDay>31</publishedDay><publishedMonth>12</publishedMonth><publishedYear>2003</publishedYear><publishedDate>2003-12-31</publishedDate><doi>10.1177/0266382103202012</doi><url>http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0266382103202012</url><notes/><college>COLLEGE NANME</college><department>Business</department><CollegeCode>COLLEGE CODE</CollegeCode><DepartmentCode>BBU</DepartmentCode><institution>Swansea University</institution><apcterm/><lastEdited>2018-10-04T09:46:55.6303468</lastEdited><Created>2018-10-04T09:46:55.6459363</Created><path><level id="1">Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences</level><level id="2">School of Management - Business Management</level></path><authors><author><firstname>Paul</firstname><surname>Jones</surname><orcid>0000-0003-0417-9143</orcid><order>1</order></author><author><firstname>Paul</firstname><surname>Beynon-Davies</surname><order>2</order></author><author><firstname>Mike</firstname><surname>Greaves</surname><order>3</order></author></authors><documents/><OutputDurs/></rfc1807>
