The importance of social connections to well-being is a contemporary focus of research across world regions. Yet, evidence of challenges to carers’ social relationships is not well understood. We undertook a scoping review of 66 articles to create a state-of-knowledge review of the social consequences of caring. Findings indicate that carers experience consequences in their relationships with care receivers, with other family members and with friends and other social relationships. There are gaps in knowledge about changes in relationships across time and in diversity in the types and extent of consequences. Given these findings, we raise concerns about the sustainability of family care. |
