Marty is a 1955 film written by Paddy Chayefsky and directed by Delbert Mann. The film won many awards including the Palme D'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Picture. Marty explored the problems that ordinary people in the Arthur Avenue (or Belmont) section of The Bronx were experiencing in the 1950s. At the time, Arthur Avenue was an Italian-American working class neighborhood. This article explores Marty from a historical perspective by discussing some of the film's major themes as they intersect with the social history of The Bronx in general and Arthur Avenue in particular before the 1970s. |
