The study involves interviews with 12 patients who had experienced a venous thromboembolism (VTE) within the previous 6 months. Participants were recruited from a cohort of patients within one hospital service. Interviews were transcribed and thematically analysed. Four key themes with 10 subthemes were identified: : VTE as life-changing and traumatic, living with uncertainty and fear of reoccurrence, feeling let down by health services, and positive changes and outcomes. Their content varied according to age at the time of VTE and participants' experiences of diagnosis and treatment. VTE was shown to have a life changing impact on participants, in terms of difficulties in coping with the VTE and its implications in terms of continuing treatment, traumatic stress, but also post-traumatic growth. |
