Item Description: Copepods are the most abundant metazoan in the ocean and their carcasses are an ubiquitous part of the pelagic environment. Using a multidisciplinary approach we demonstrate that such carcasses host anoxic diagenetic hotspots that sustain active denitrification, thereby representing an important but overlooked sink for bioavailable nitrogen in the ocean.
