Abstract: |
The present article shows the differences between two groups of German-Turkish bilinguals and a monolingual control group in the use of lexical collocations in Turkish involving two different verbal constructions ("yap-" and "et-", both "to do" in English). We compare a group of Turkish-German bilinguals who live in Germany (heritage speakers of Turkish) with a group of bilinguals who grew up in Germany but went back to Turkey when they were young adults (the returnees). We show that the heritage speakers differ in their use of these collocations from a monolingual speakers in Turkey, but that the returnees gradually adopt to the language use of monolingual Turkish speakers after their return. These findings are discussed with regard to theories of ultimate attainment and incomplete acquisition of heritage speakers. |
