Item Description: Non-predation mortality is often ignored in zooplankton population dynamics models despite frequent observations of non-predation mass mortality of zooplankton, mainly due to methodological difficulty in measuring in situ non-predation mortality rate. In this study we described a sediment trap method in combination with a carcass flux model to estimate in situ non-predation zooplankton mortality. This approach yielded a non-predation mortality rate that was consistent with physiological death rate, and was also consistent with concurrent zooplankton abundance data. The results will improve our understanding of zooplankton population dynamics and related ecological processes.
