Item Description: The work reported in this paper was conducted under EPSRC grant GR/N35182 whose outcomes were assessed as "Outstanding" - the highest possible assessment. It reports on the first observation of the gas sensing mechanism using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in vacuum and also at elevated temperature. This novel approach represented a breakthrough in the gas sensing field as XPS allows the direct measurement of the surface electronic properties, which are crucial to the sensor performance, but cannot be determined by resistance measurements alone.
