Item Description: <p>The paper reports on the realisation of an ultra-compact laser and optical amplifier based on highly-doped material and in house fabricated waveguide devices. It demonstrated a gain record value of 5.5 dB/cm. Ultracompact amplifier and related developed know-out have been recognised as promising for metro applications (result cited in magazine Fiber Systems/Lightwave Europe 8/2005 and reprinted 12/2005). The activity generated international collaboration within EU-Networks of Excellence e-Photon1plus and COST 291.</p>
