Phaeocystis antarctica is the dominant phytoplankton species in the Southern Ocean. Our knowledge of its biology has been limited to the austral spring and summer due to logistical reasons. This study is the first to demonstrate this species' ability to survive prolonged darkness and freezing in austral winter conditions, and helps complete our understanding of the life cycle of this key primary producer. |
