Abstract: |
The majority of theoretical studies investigating the influence of environmental variation on population and community dynamics are based on an assumption of very weak environmental effects. We explicitly tested the effect of increasing the strength of environmental variation on population extinction risk in model communities, demonstrating that stronger environmental variation introduces novel, unexpected results. This knowledge will guide us to collect the sort of data that is required before appropriate management and/or conservation decisions are made, reducing the risk of spurious and/or harmful predictions when applying model based inference to natural populations. |
