Abstract: This article critiques the green economy initiative in the run up to and following the Rio+20 United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development 2012. It first considers the location of the green economy initiative in the sustainablity debate. It goes on to discuss the United Nation's institutional buy-in to the green economy project and the attitudes of states and major groups towards it. The piece concludes by observing the impact and implications of emerging new alignments and ideological positions within the international community on the green economy initiative and the summit's outcome document 'The Future We Want'.
