Abstract: This chapter provides a summary analysis of the main trajectories, successes and setbacks of democratization in Europe's post-Communist states between 1989 and 2009, as well as a critical appraisal of the preponderance of astonishingly naive, complacent and simplistic unilinear conceptions of 'democratic transition' and 'democratic consolidation' in the vast literature on post-Communist democratization.
