Item Description: Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) dominates the field of non-destructive testing in the well-defined contexts involving carbon steel especially where speed of testing is critical, for example in the petrochemical industry where plant decommissioning and out-of-service costs are high. A well-known limitation of MFL is the ambiguity when mapping the captured signals back to the defect shapes, harnessing for example non-linear finite element approaches. These approaches tend to be computationally intense and unsuitable for certain in situ applications, for example in side above –ground storage tanks. The two major contributions of this paper are first the efficient processing of the multi-valued solutions to give the most likely candidate from a given ambiguous set; second, when compared with equivalent published works there is an order of magnitude reduction in computational requirements, making in-situ solution more viable.
